Here is my favorite video for teachers -

I like to laugh and I think a funny video would really work wonders with kids getting engaged. Our students really live in a video world and I remember that when I was in an elem school so many of the teachers complained that they couldn’t compete with Sesame Street. I agree that this new generation of kids is too often left to the mercy of the video – I hate seeing kids being shuttled to school and around town locations while being plugged into a dvd player in the car. I think it is fine for long trips but my best conversations with my children were often in the car (where they were a captive audience – LOL).

Anyway – I think a video is great way to capture their interest and being able to embed it in a web page is really the way to go since You Tube is often blocked.

I have found lots of things on Teacher Tube – I had trouble getting into it today. But we did have a science class post a video there last year. They had done a rap about the environment and the teacher wanted to post it on our website. That took F O R E V E R to download so we uploaded it to teacher tube and did a link to that page. Now that I know how to embed it – I’ll be doing that in the future.

I often forget about you tube at school since it is blocked but I will encourage my teachers to utilize this great fun tool in the future.

Podcasting in Education – Actually I think podcasting is a great thing but I find much like blogs (including this one) educational podcasts seem to be self-indulgent. The ones I listened to were so much blah blah blah I’m afraid. The ones I listened to were mostly radio sorts of shows and I don’t have the patience for all that.

I think they could be great – if they were specific – for instance a study guide. And even drilling it down harder – like three things you want to be sure you know for the test. That is helpful and pertinent. I tried listening to a teacher podcast today that wasn’t part of the class – he had taped an entire parent meeting – unedited, it was painful. I wanted to hear what he said about Ning and couldn’t stand to wait that long. I think teachers using it with students is really the way to go. Students really want to hear themselves and if they each take a topic and review it, they will benefit and other students will listen.

Personally – I am a podcasting junkie. I anxiously await every episode This American Live (NPR) and Planet Money (NPR) in addtion to other kinds of podcasts. I use YOGAmazing to change up my yoga workout and just love that these things come to my computer and ipod automatically with very little work on my part. Once you do the work – you just enjoy the ride!

I have to go back and do a few things but for the most part I’m very close to completion. Here are my thoughts about the class:

There is so much offered here – I agree all these things are all blurred and confused in my head.

I had so much fun getting my brain so befuddled.

I feel empowered – in the know – I like that feeling.

I know the best way in my school to start moving along is with baby steps and let word of mouth help spread the success stories and the interest.

Although we didn’t cover twitter, this class helped me go ahead and jump in and now a teacher who is going on the 8th grade trip is going to twitter how the trip is going so parents, friends and staff can follow!

I am very very happy I took this class and I’m glad I took it in the spring – then I have the summer to try to revisit these pages (I hope they will still be available) and digest things and really work on making some of these tools available with support to my teachers.

Thanks to all and especially to Jerre – she is a role model to me and I am a big fan!

Hmm – How very interesting. I had no idea there was such a thing. I do think the students would REALLY get into this. I have two ideas right off the top – one, our media specialist has a book club and I think she would really jump on this and try it out. Also, we have a graduation coach who might jump on it. I went to the middle school group and this looks really pretty feasible. My overall impression is that this is where our students live and at some point we might need to meet them there – LOL. I do feel online social networking like facebook and myspace are gigantic time eaters, not necessarily gigantic time wasters but since I spend so much time looking at a computer, spending even more time online doesn’t really appeal to me. Of course, I was the same person who didn’t think much about blogs and I subscirbe to a large number of them in my reader these days!

I am happy I have been exposed to this as I do think we have a few takers at my school.

OK so I’m in the minority and I’m not wild about Pageflakes. I see that it could have uses. Since many of the things a teacher might put on here are blocked in our district that diminishes the usefulness for me. I guess I give it a C+ for being practical from my perspective. I can see that someone could do a really good subject page – again if so many things weren’t blocked but it doesn’t do much for me. I had hoped when I first started exploring it that I could use it for teacher web pages. We will eventually be getting sharepoint I think for teacher websites but for right now we are totally on our own. I do believe I will go with Plan A and have my teachers use weebly.com. I am open to doing more research and playing around with it but for now, I’m not a fan.

Google Docs are good – I like this whole idea. As a tech in a school of seriously overburdened teachers, I don’t see them using a whole lot of this but I think they would like it if they would. The other reason I’m not sure the teachers will buy it is because they have a teacher share folder on one of our servers and they actually do many of the same things on that server space. What I do think they might like is the survey feature of google docs especially for use with their parents. That is one thing I will share with my teachers. One thing I will personally use it for is a “survey/form” for teachers requesting help. Techs all over the county are already doing that and I will be designing a form in the near future. My third item is that this would be a very cool tool for collaboration among our tech specialists. I just created a word document for something I am going to help some fellow techs with and I will use that immediately. Google Docs? I like it – I think I will like it more and more as time goes on!
